To post or not to post - An evidence based insight into decision making of restoring endodontically treated teeth

It generally is agreed that the successful treatment of a badly broken down tooth with pulpal disease depends not only on good endodontic therapy, but also on good prosthetic reconstruction of the tooth after endodontic therapy is completed.

For most, if not all general dental practitioners, reviewing the principles for the use of posts in terms of when it is necessary to use a post, different types of posts, various post materials and designs, the criteria and technique for post space preparation and post cementation, principles of core buildup, as well as options for the final restorations are of high demand and represented among the hot topics.

This lecture addresses the factors that govern post placemat necessity and different core build up materials; thus answering the clinical questions that practitioners face in their practices.
By the end of this lecture, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify different post materials and designs.
  2. Provide the general practitioners with an overview of the criteria of post placement and core material selection.
  3. Utilize the evidence-based dentistry to scientifically evaluate the effectiveness of placing a proper post and core on the longevity of an endodontically treated tooth.
